ADMIRAL Thad Allen is my “Friend”

The great Unofficial Coast Blog reported today that ADMIRAL Thad Allen, Commandant of the US Coast Guard has a Facebook Page. (The 4 – 8 watch is secure) I was intrigued so I went over there, found him and sent him a short note with a “friend” request. By the time it took me to get [...]

NY Times Investigative reporting at it’s Finest - “After Kite Boarder’s Accident, Some Say Winds Were Too Much”

Okay maybe it’s just me but that this NY Times headline seems rather obvious: After Kite Boarder’s Accident, Some Say Winds Were Too Much. Watch this and you be the judge: Here’s an interesting side story in the NY Times article which seems to reinforce the notion that kiteboarders are persistent. A permutation of the sport was [...]

Olympic-Fever

Aren’t these Olympics great with Michael Phelps, the Redeem Team and those perky gymnasts. Here’s an event that you might have missed due to the time difference in Beijing. Closer to home, here is footage from the national training camp for the 2012 Olympics in London. (I still think they have time to shake that [...]

Thanks for participating in The Tabor Boy Project!

On a late summer day in 1973 I first stepped aboard Tabor Boy as a wide-eyed, green freshman. Like thousands of other boys and girls who have crossed the rail of this amazing vessel, my life was forever changed that day. Four years later, I left Tabor Academy as a young adult confident that I could accomplish nearly anything I set my mind to doing.

In 2001, I became the executive director of the American Sail Training Association where I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of other sail training vessels and tall ships from across the world. From this unique perspective, my appreciation for my Tabor Boy experiences only grew stronger.

Several years ago, Patrick Collins, a Tabor student and Tabor Boy executive officer, wrote a book about the history of the schooner for his senior project. This website picks up on Pat Collins' great work.

Over the past year there has been a major transformation in how we use technology and the internet to communicate and work. Collaborative software and websites like this one allow people to co-create like not even imagined when Pat wrote his history. The Tabor Boy Project is an effort to capture the stories, photos and videos that continue to add to Tabor Boy's rich history and define and demonstrate her mission.

Please register, read, contribute and converse. The Tabor Boy Project is a living history work in progress that needs your contributions. Thanks for sharing!

Tabor Boy sighting!

I was drafted for kid duty on Friday and thankfully my friend Randy Peffer invited Luke (5), Joy (3) and me to go sailing with him on his schooner, Sarah Abbott. It was an exquisite day on Buzzards Bay. Here's a link to a post about it on the Sea-Fever blog. Returning to Sippican Harbor we crossed courses with Tabor Boy which looked to be on an Alumni Weekend cruise. She lo… Continue

Good times, good times. Revisted

One year ago today, Alex Rivard, Class of 2008, wrote one of the best and funniest posts on The Tabor Boy Project entitled Good times, good times. No matter what era you sailed on the schooner, I guarantee that you'll find a lot familiar. It's comforting to know that the ship and experience stand the test of time. If you haven't read it before, go now. And that's an order! ;-) SMILE

The Tabor Boy Project Celebrates Its First Birthday!

The Tabor Boy Project is one year old! It all start after attending a Headmaster's Council meeting at Tabor Academy on April 14, 2007. I have always felt incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to go to Tabor but that day really brought it home for me. While It is grea… Continue

104 Crew Members Strong!

It had been a few days since I logged in at The Tabor Boy Project and today I was thrilled to see that we passed the 100 member waypoint on April 1st when Emerald Epke joined. Ironically, Emerald works with Bob Glover ('78) and me over at Northeast Maritime Institute and we've been trying to get her to join for months. Looks like she was just waiting for a shot at that roundest of n… Continue

Hi Peter, I was just browsing your page and I LOVE the old pictures of the schooner! It's funny how much she's changed. Have you seen her since they finished the refit this fall?

Peter,
Thanks for setting up a cool web sight! Hope you remember that we met at the 50th year of service dinner at the whaling museum, New Bedford 2004.
We sat next to each other at the table with Jamie Hutton, Bob Glover, Ted Brown and more.......
Fun time! How are things at the ASTA?
Regards,
Jon Lincoln

Peter, I see a few of the other members are also active seagoing mariners. My company is looking to get another tanker and I would like to shamelessly recruit prior Tabor Boy crewmember, if possible.

Glad you like the photo - it was taken a year ago. The guy next to me is the OIC of our security team. Great guy. His name is Untonio and from Alabama. He is a USN CPO and very smart and squared away.
