Answer to David Rose's question about Johnny Crocker.

Yes, David, I am that Johnny Crocker.

I played trumpet at Sippican school and was a member of the band along with your sister, Betsey.

Sorry I took so long to answer you.  Looking forward to more e-mail exchanges in the future.

Major transitions at Tabor

Major transitions at Tabor.

i’ve been following some of the major changes at Tabor, they are in the middle of a search for a new head of school, and apparently Captain Gail has retired, and the boat sits  with no captain and apparently right now no mission or direction while  the Covid virus is throwing the entire school into frantic efforts to assure student safety in the coming school year.

do any of us know what’s going on with the boat? Do we have any…

My friend Tim

I would also like to add my note of sympathy and assure my lifelong friendship with Tim, who's passing also resulted in my refreshing my long-term friendship with  Tim's sister Dee.

When I was a senior at Tabor in 1962, Tim and I charted a little schooner over the summer to do Buzzards Bay and hopefully hit Provincetown. Or the one leg of our voyage Dee and her college roommate, she was a freshman in college then, came along and we had an absolutely wonderful week being very…

Tim Manning

Shipmates of Tim Manning - Sorry to report that he has passed away. He was 4 years ahead of me at Tabor and was a great influence on my decision to sail on the Tabor Boy with my father. He also took care of my sisters and me, as youngsters, before I went to Tabor and, of course, my father, Cap Glaeser, thought very highly of Tim and his family. Smooth sailing Tim.......

Share your thoughts about Tabor Boy: 100 Years at Sea by John Rice

A couple of years ago I got a call from a Tabor alum that I had never met before about a film he was making about Tabor Boy and the school's sail training program. I think we were connected through the schools's alumni office. We agreed to meet on his boat at the New Bedford Yacht Club in Padanaram, MA. My son Luke joined us and we rendezvoused with my friend and former shipmate Captain Robert Glover to watch some footage recently shot of the schooner in action.

I was…

Tabor Boy 100th Anniversary Commemorative Seal

To commemorate the schooner’s 100th Anniversary, Tucker Francis ’16, with the help of Captain James Geil and a couple of other students and crew, created this wonderful 100th Anniversary Seal.  Using Tabor’s school seal as a model, Tucker and his design crew painstakingly came up with an incredibly accurate rendition of our current schooner.  The wording…

Aboard the Tabor Boy in Annapolis

The Tabor Boy reunion in Annapolis on April 5, 2014 was a wonderful event.  It was great to meet "new" school head John Quirk, XO Holly Francis, XO Ryan England (Tabor '04, USNA '08, Columbia University School of Medicine '17!). It was also very nice to catch up with Capt Geil, and Charlie Ingersoll '78, and to meet Charlie's wife, Honor Ingersoll.

I had not been on the boat for quite a few years. Interesting changes above and below decks.  Besides the obvious rigging changes, I…

Nova Scotia

The schooner is headed to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in June.  We will be stopping in Portland, ME for a reception on the 16th before heading back to Marion for the Alumni cruises.  Definitely stop by and see her in Maine!

Holly Francis

Executive Officer

SSV Tabor Boy

**Plans changed due to a nasty front, and we ended up going to Maine.  Still an awesome trip -- maybe next year for NS.

looking for photo

Glad to have found the forum.
Perhaps you can help me. I'm interested in obtaining a copy of a photograph taken of the Tabor Boy in the Fall of 1966 before the vessel left for the Thanksgiving cruise to South Carolina for Winter lay up. I think it's the finest picture of her that I've seen so far and am sure others would agree. The picture was used for the embossed outside cover of the 1967 Tabor Year Book depicting her on a reach, heeled over to the…

HarborFinder Free Nautical app for Android smart phones

There are a lot of "apps" available for smart phones but here's one that is terrific for the mariner. Class of '79 Bill Earle and his associate at BBN/Rayetheon came up with this free Android app for voyage planning. Bill and his associate would like to get some feedback on the app so download it, have fun with it, and let him know how well it works for you - bearle@bbn.com …

Headmaster Search Update

I was recently honored to be asked to be part of a small group of alums interviewing the final five headmaster candidates. One down, four to go.

From the first interview yesterday and reviewing the quality of all of the resumes, the future of the school should end up in good hands.

You'll be pleased to know that in addition to me advocating on the behalf of the traditions of the School by the Sea, the sail training program and Tabor Boy, Jack…

Headmaster Stroud is retiring. Please help the search!

You've probably already been contacted either directly by Jay Stroud or the always efficient development department that the school will soon be looking for a new headmaster. It will be sad to see Jay go after doing such a tremendous job all for nearly a quarter century leading the school. It's a much better place today than it was when I was there oh so long ago.

I have always appreciated Jay's unyielding support of the schooner Tabor Boy and the sail training program, often in the…
